The Sajha Manch Basti Abhiyan was started in 2002 with the objective of building a wider alliance of communities on pertinent rights issues and consolidating concerted action on the same. The idea was to provide adequate information to slum dwellers on the emerging politics of evictions and resettlement in the city, where in since the last decade lakhs have been displaced, and mobilise them for necessary action.
A team of Sajha Manch activists was formed that took this abhiyan to slum clusters across Delhi including those where Manch’s members were not active. This organized meetings at regular intervals, put up exhibitions and distributed pamphlets, specifically designed to support the process.
The overall purpose of this initiative was
- To establish direct relations with communities and inform them of the dominant policy and planning regime related to housing, basic services, livelihoods, governance, implementation of policies, roles and responsibilities of different civic agencies, track record of civic agencies etc.
- To widen the base of Sajha Manch’s work and share experiences of the Manch’s work with communities w.r.t issues affecting them directly.
- Mobilise community residents on specific issues/questions.
The Abhiyan was taken to two areas in the city, the Yamuna Pushta and North-West (Pitampura, Rohini, Azad Pur, Shalimar bagh, Punjabi Bagh, Badli etc). Four activists were placed in each of these areas. They were given adequate training through periodic workshops. They aldo organized monthly meetings to review work, share problems and decide future course of action.
The abhiyan was concluded after a year, during which time about 30 clusters were covered. Since the time the participant groups keep in active touch with the Manch. |
