One of the key constituencies in our outreach efforts is the middle-class, which is largely detached from concerns of the poor. We feel that it is vital to break this apathy, and we recognize the greatest potential to do so among young students.

We organize student exposures for school and college students to their city and the lives of its people. Such exposures have included trips to the Yamuna, the site of the former Yamuna Pushta slum, to sewage disposal sites, resettlement colonies, traditional water harvesting systems from medieval Delhi , and to the ridge. We invite resource people from specialized fields to conduct interactive lecture/discussions with groups on issues facing the poor. These lectures use films, literature, slideshows and photographs.

The Hazards Centre also coordinates a young volunteers program in the summer and winter breaks. As part of it, interested students from schools and colleges are paired with community groups from our alliances. They have the opportunity to do direct service work in the communities, primary and secondary research, documentation, writing, and more.

Given the need to create a wider support network for our struggles, we feel it critical to strengthen our engagement with larger sections of civil society and thus student outreach is emerging as a significant part of our overall work.
